St. Elizabeth (1864-1918)

“ I am leaving the brilliant world where I have occupied a high position, and now, together with all of you, I am about to ascend into a much greater world, the world of the poor and afflicted.  በብልጭልጩ ዓለም ያለኝን ክፍተኛ ቦታ ትቸ ወደ ታላቅና ከፍተኛ ዓለም ወደሆነው ወደ ደሀዋችና  ተጎጅዎች ዐለም እሄድ ዘንድ ከሁላችም ከናንተ ጋር ነኝ ::"

Shortly after the assassination of her beloved husband, when presented with many opportunities to flee Russia, Princes Elizabeth chose to remain in the country and took on a monastic vow and became a nun. Selling all her possessions she funded the building of a monastery that cared for the sick, and the destitute of the city of Moscow where she once was the First Lady. Along with the sisters of Sts. Mary and Martha convent,  She cared for the poor, the sick, and the dying serving up to 300 meals a day. She abandoned, comfort, fame, and wealth to find joy in praying, caring, and partaking in the sufferings of the poor. On October 18, 1918, Nun Elizabeth, along with her royal companions were all murdered by casting into a deep mine shaft by the godless communist revolutionaries.

Wonfel  (ወንፈል ተራድዖ) is pleased to name a fund after St. Elizabeth the New Martyr honoring her timeless sacrifice, and our non-Ethiopian supporters who recognize the need to help those who are suffering in Ethiopia because of attack on their ethnic identity. Since 2019 several thousands of Amharas and other ethnic minorities have been attacked and murdered because of their ethnic identity.  Primary beneficiaries of this fund are women, children, and those who became disabled due to ethnic attacks and forced to abject poverty and suffering.  A substantial amount of the fund will be used to revitalize these victims by starting them with small community-based economic projects that will lead them to full economic independence.
