IDPs in Debrebirhan primarily come from the Oromia regional state. These IDPs were displaced from Oromia due to ethnic based conflict in the area. In Debre Birhan, a significant population of IDPs faces overcrowded and dilapidated shelters, scarce essential non-food items, inconsistent access to basic services like sanitation and healthcare, and high protection risks, including gender-based violence. The humanitarian response remains insufficient, with severe funding gaps and operational challenges hindering efforts to meet the needs of the affected population. Wonfel has launched an impactful new initiative, in collaboration with a dedicated team in San Jose, to empower a select group of women among internally displaced persons (IDPs). This program specifically targets women who have faced significant challenges, offering them both financial capital—ranging from micro-loans to grants—and comprehensive training in essential business skills and management practices.
The initiative aims to empower internally displaced women by providing microloans, business training, and mentorship, helping them achieve financial independence. Participants will engage in hands-on workshops on budgeting, marketing, and product development, and will receive guidance from experienced entrepreneurs.
By equipping these women with the necessary skills and resources, Wonfel seeks to create sustainable income-generating opportunities that foster financial independence for the participants while contributing to the economic stability of their families and communities. The goal is to uplift these women, enabling them to build thriving micro-businesses that can lead to long-term prosperity and resilience within their communities.
Supporting these initiatives includes providing access to capital, grants, and training in business management, financial literacy, and marketing. Successful examples illustrate the potential for IDPs to generate income, improve their living standards, and make positive contributions to their local communities.
